1. Ropebridge Chasm - Snow
Starting our list strong is the Ropebridge Chasm - Snow, a travel map that perfectly encapsulates winter’s stark, perilous beauty. This map features a narrow ravine with sheer cliffs blanketed in snow, bisected by a broken rope bridge hanging precariously over frigid waters. The treacherous environment and sense of isolation make for the perfect backdrop for any number of dramatic encounters.
💡 As you approach the chasm’s edge, a biting wind whips past your cheeks, carrying flurries of snow. The remains of a rope bridge dangle precariously over the icy waters below, swaying with each strong gust. A narrow strip of land stretches between the cliffs, but the rock is sheer and covered in a thick layer of frost, making any attempt to climb across seem nearly impossible.
Suggested Scenarios
- Bridge Repair: The party must repair or replace the broken rope bridge to continue their journey. This could involve gathering materials, using their spells, or solving a puzzle.
- Environmental Challenge: The frigid floes below and the icy cliffs could pose an environmental obstacle for the players to traverse. The party might use their skills, spells, and abilities to safely get everyone across, possibly facing hypothermia, fall damage, or other hazards.
- The Chase: The party may be pursued by enemies and must quickly find a way across before their pursuers catch up, forcing them to think on their feet under pressure. Conversely, the party might be in hot pursuit of foes who have just crossed the ravine and cut the bridge, leaving the party to find their way across or lose their quarry.
2. Slum District - Winter Day
Next on our list is the Slum District — Winter Day map, a variant of the Slum District map that vividly portrays the gritty, desolate reality of a city’s underbelly in the bitter winter. This map features a rundown dock covered in snow, with ramshackle buildings and narrow, shadowy alleys. The biting cold seeps into the cracks of dilapidated homes and freezes the muddy streets: a stark reminder that here, survival is a privilege that should not be taken for granted.
💡 As you step into the district, the harsh chill of winter seems to seep into your bones. Ramshackle buildings lean precariously, their roofs heavy with ice and snow. The air is thick with the scent of decay and stale smoke, the faint sounds of coughing and distant murmurs are muffled by the heavy snow. Every breath feels like a struggle against the relentless cold.
Suggested Scenarios
- Blizzard Break-In: During a fierce blizzard, the party must break into a well-guarded warehouse to steal or recover an artifact. The howling winds and heavy snowfall reduce visibility and muffle sounds—a double-edged sword that can aid the party’s attempts at stealth, but also present new challenges by making navigation and communication difficult.
- Hunting the Hunter: A dangerous predator, such as an escaped monster or skilled assassin, stalks the district. The party must track and eliminate this threat while contending with the bitter cold, reduced visibility, and other environmental hazards.
- Cold-Blooded Investigation: A series of mysterious deaths plagues the slums, and the cold has preserved the crime scenes perfectly. The party must now investigate these scenes, piece together clues, and uncover the culprit.
3. Japanese Castle Exterior - Winter
This Japanese Castle Exterior — Winter map transports your party to the serene but formidable grounds of a traditional Japanese castle. The map features towering castle walls, elegant pagodas, and meticulously manicured gardens, all covered in a pristine layer of snow. Yet, the tranquil beauty of the scene belies the underlying sense of vigilance and discipline that such a stronghold demands.
💡 As you approach the castle, the crisp winter air fills your lungs. A snow-covered set of stairs winds through the meticulously maintained gardens, leading to the imposing castle’s door. Icicles hang from the eaves of pagodas, and the soft crunch of snow underfoot is the only sound in the stillness.
Suggested Scenarios
- Siege in the Snow: The party must defend the castle from an impending siege by enemies or monsters. The snowy weather and terrain might provide both challenges and opportunities for strategic positioning, and creative players might use the environment to their advantage while contending with reduced mobility.
- Infiltration Mission: Under the cover of a winter night, the party must infiltrate the castle to retrieve a stolen artifact or rescue a captured ally. This map also comes with a “night” variant, as well as a beautiful interior map that could be used to extend your adventure into the castle itself.
- Spiritual Encounters: The tranquil beauty of the castle grounds has been disrupted by a supernatural threat—be it by yokai or other malicious presences. The party must fend them off and perform a ritual that will rid the grounds of these eerie disturbances once and for all.
4. Celestial Chapel - Winter Day
The Celestial Chapel: Winter Day map captures the serene and pristine exterior of a small monastery chapel nestled near a rushing river. The path to the chapel is illuminated by torches, with bridges spanning the icy waters and leading to a grand entrance.
In the courtyards, however, a graveyard and numerous carts filled with bodies wrapped in cloth paint a grim picture against the otherwise tranquil winter landscape. This chapel has long fallen silent, and rumors of a devastating plague or otherworldly threat have spread through the nearby villages.
💡 The frosty air nips at your skin as you approach the chapel. Snow crunches beneath your boots, and the soft glow of torchfire casts flickering shadows along the path. The river rushes by, icy water shimmering in the pale winter light. Several haphazard graves stand solemnly in the courtyard, and the sight of several carts filled with shrouded bodies reminds you that this once-holy sanctuary has become the scene of something much more sinister.
Suggested Scenarios
- Plague Investigation: The party has been tasked with uncovering the source of this mysterious “plague” that has befallen the chapel. They must search for clues, investigate the bodies, and possibly find a cure—or, at least, a way to prevent it from claiming more lives.
- Thralls of the Dark: The clergy of the chapel have been transformed into creatures of the night by fiends or a curse. The party must now navigate the chapel’s desecrated grounds, dealing with these foes while trying to save any survivors.
- Guard the Chapel’s Secrets: The chapel houses ancient manuscripts and sacred mysteries that may have drawn the attention of otherworldly beings. The party must defend its position against an impending attack by hostile forces seeking to exploit it in its weakened state.
5. Celestial Gate - Winter
This Celestial Gate: Winter map will transport your players to a magnificent, otherworldly stone structure nestled deep within an enchanted birch forest. Framed by portals on all four sides and intricate angelic runes is a grand, central circular gate in the middle of the structure—a perfect union of a winter forest’s peaceful ambiance and the eeriness of something out of this world.
💡 The frosty air whispers through the birch trees. There’s a faint hum of power in the air, and the runes carved into the structure shimmer with a strange glow. The surrounding woods are strangely silent. You get the feeling that you are nearing the brink of discovering something ancient, something unknowable—a secret that has been waiting to be found for a very, very long time.
Suggested Scenarios
- Runic Puzzle: The celestial runes on the gate hold the key to unlocking its power. The power must decipher the puzzle to activate the gate and reveal its secrets.
- Hostile Takeover: The once-holy Celestial Gate has been corrupted and has become the gateway for fiends, aberrations, or other monsters to spill into the world. The party must defend against waves of enemies coming through the gate, and figure out a way to seal it shut.
- Fey Trickery: A bored Archfey has tampered with the gate, causing it to behave unpredictably. The party must journey through a warped, enchanted forest and make deals with mischievous fey creatures to restore the use of the gate and return home.
